What you can expect from the Dragon’s Mate series

Get guidance on trigger warnings and expectations across my books.

Here, I’m going to tell you what you can expect to get from my Dragon’s Mate shifter series.

I love a lot of things about shifter romance, including the magic that infuses the world, the fated mates, the loyalty of the clan, the protectiveness and, yeah, the hot shifter boyfriends.

Found family

What I try to do in my stories is to really lean into the things I love.  That’s why my Dragon’s Mate series is about a clan who live in a castle together.  I just love those found family feels.

While every book is different, the first book in the series is about Lew, one of the Hoskins clan, and Morgan, a younger man from a rival clan who has gone there for training.  It means we get to see the Hoskins family through the eyes of someone already a part of that, and someone on the outside who slowly moves deeper and deeper into the heart of the family.  If you love some supportive family, a few intimidating cousins and a Gramps who has everyone believing that they’re secretly his favourite grandchild, then you’ll love Family of Fire.

Book cover with the bold title 'Family of Fire' in golden lettering. The main image is of a handsome young white man with grown hair and a neatly-trimmed beard. He is shirtless and muscular, and is looking pensively off into the distance. Behind him, a dragon is in flight against a stormy sky. There are orange flames flickering at the bottom of the cover. Other text includes the series details 'Dragon's Mate book 1' and the author's name 'Hope Bennett'.

Responsibility

There are a few tropes I don’t personally enjoy reading (no shame on the people who do – personal preference is nothing to be ashamed of) and so I steer clear of those things.  For example, I like protectiveness and even some possessiveness, but there’s a clear line for me between that and outright abuse.  I keep to the side of that line that I’m comfortable with and I won’t be writing any entitled alphas any time soon.

In my Dragon’s Mate world, there are elders of each dragon clan and they are protective and must be obeyed.  However, it’s clear that Nana, the Hoskins elder, is strict but loving and repays the loyalty she earns by actively protecting and looking after her clan.  Lord Somerville, on the other hand, demands obedience but doesn’t take on any of the responsibility of leadership.  Fingers crossed he’ll get what’s coming to him (oooh was that a hint about a future book?).

Hurt and healing

There is action and peril in this series and some characters may get hurt, but all the MCs will get their HEA, so don’t worry.

Some of my MCs come from abusive families (see the Somerville clan) and that affects the way they think and behave.  It’s there but I don’t go into detail about psychological abuse or physical abuse because I want my characters to move on, learn to heal and become the people they were meant to be.  There is no sexual abuse in my books, even in backstory.

I like to champion all the good things I see in shifter series and the real world.  Even though they are all unique, my men are loving, supportive and loyal.

If that’s what you’re after, congratulations, we’re book soulmates!
